How to clean text

  1. Paste text into the first box.
  2. Leave on only the cleanup rules you need, or use the small All on and All off shortcuts.
  3. Compare the live result with the original, especially when spacing carries meaning.
  4. Copy or download the result. Choose Use result as input if you want to run another pass with different options.

What each option changes

Collapse extra spaces
Runs of ordinary horizontal spaces become one space without joining separate lines.
Replace tabs
Each tab becomes a space, which is useful for text copied from tables or code editors.
Trim each line
Spaces at the beginning and end of every line are removed.
Reduce blank lines
Three or more consecutive line breaks become two, leaving at most one blank line between sections.

Common cleanup workflows

Text copied from a PDF
Start with all options on. Check paragraph breaks carefully because a PDF may encode each visual row as a separate line.
Notes with uneven spacing
Collapse extra spaces and trim each line. Keep blank-line reduction off when several blank rows intentionally separate topics.
Table or spreadsheet cells
Replace tabs only when the columns no longer need to align. Plain-text tabs can contain useful structure that one space cannot preserve.
Code or fixed-width text
Use All off, then enable only the exact rule you understand. Indentation and aligned spaces can be meaningful, so a general cleanup pass may damage the content.
Repeated cleanup passes
Run one conservative rule, inspect the result, then choose Use result as input before enabling another rule. This makes each change easier to review.

Review before using the result

The character summary tells you how much shorter the output became, while the line summary helps reveal unexpected paragraph changes. These counts are signals, not proof that the cleaned text is correct. Compare names, lists, quotations and formatted examples before replacing an important source.

The cleaner changes whitespace only. It does not remove duplicate sentences, HTML tags, control characters or zero-width characters, and it does not correct grammar. Use a dedicated tool when the task requires those transformations.

Spaces, tabs and non-breaking spaces

Collapse extra spaces treats ordinary spaces, form-feed, vertical-tab and non-breaking spaces as horizontal spacing. When enabled, a run becomes one ordinary space. This is convenient for prose but can remove deliberate non-breaking behavior from content prepared for the web.

Replace tabs converts each tab into one space before other selected rules run. It does not reproduce an editor's tab width, which may appear as two, four or eight columns. Keep the option off when alignment matters.

Line endings and paragraph structure

The tool detects the first line-ending style in the input and uses it for the output. Reduce repeated blank lines leaves at most one empty row between sections; it does not merge ordinary adjacent lines. Trim each line can turn a line containing only spaces into an empty line, after which blank-line reduction may shorten the run.

Use cleanup responsibly

Keep an untouched copy when cleaning contracts, transcripts, source code, accessibility text or evidence. Whitespace can communicate indentation, speaker changes and data boundaries. Automated cleanup should support a review, not silently replace it.

Limits and privacy

The input is limited to 250,000 characters and stays in this browser. Nothing is uploaded or saved by the tool. Cleaning is deterministic and rule-based: it does not rewrite sentences, correct grammar or change punctuation.

Common questions

Will paragraphs be merged?

No. Space cleanup does not remove ordinary line breaks. The blank-line option only reduces long runs of empty lines.

Can I keep tabs?

Yes. Turn off “Replace tabs with spaces.” The other selected cleanup rules will continue to apply.

What happens when every option is off?

The output matches the input. This is useful as a safe starting point before enabling one rule at a time.

Does the cleaner remove duplicate lines?

No. Duplicate-line removal is a different operation because repeated rows can be intentional.

Can I undo a cleanup pass?

The browser cannot reconstruct removed whitespace. Keep the original in the first box until you have reviewed the result, or save a separate copy before using the result as new input.
