How to format a WhatsApp message

  1. Type a message and select the words or lines you want to change.
  2. Press one of the small format buttons. With no selection, a formatting pair is inserted at the cursor.
  3. Review the visible marks and use Undo last change if the selection was wrong.
  4. Copy the WhatsApp-ready text and paste it into your chat. Check the preview there before sending.

Formatting marks used

Text styles
Bold uses *asterisks*, italic uses _underscores_, strikethrough uses ~tildes~, inline code uses one backtick, and monospace uses three backticks.
Line styles
Bullets use “- ”, numbered lists use “1. ” and quotes use “> ” at the beginning of each selected line.
Compatibility
Some newer line formats may not appear the same on every WhatsApp platform or version. Review the pasted message before sending.

Choose the format for the message

Bold
Wraps the selection in asterisks. Use it for a short action, date or key phrase rather than an entire long message.
Italic
Wraps the selection in underscores. It can provide light emphasis, but a receiving app decides how the marks are rendered.
Strikethrough
Wraps the selection in tildes. It can show a correction or cancelled item when the original wording still needs to remain visible.
Inline code
Uses one backtick on each side. It is useful for a short command, filename or literal value inside a sentence.
Monospace
Uses three backticks around the selection. It suits a longer literal block, but support and wrapping can vary by platform.
Bullets, numbers and quotes
Prefix complete selected lines. List numbering restarts at 1 each time the button is applied.

How selection works

Text styles wrap the exact selection. If nothing is selected, the tool inserts an empty pair and places the cursor between its marks so you can type inside it. Line styles expand the selection to complete lines, which prevents a bullet or quote mark from appearing halfway through a row.

Repeated clicks add another set of marks. The tool does not guess whether existing marks are formatting or ordinary punctuation. Use Undo last change immediately after an accidental operation, or use Remove marks only after reviewing what it may remove.

Undo and Remove marks are different

Undo last change restores the message and selection from the most recent toolbar operation in this browser session. It is a one-step safeguard for formatting, mark removal or clearing. Typing after an operation starts a new source state and disables that stored undo so older text is not restored unexpectedly.

Remove marks scans the complete message for supported wrappers and line prefixes. It can also remove characters that were intended literally, such as asterisks around a mathematical note or a hyphen at the start of a line. Keep a copy when punctuation is important.

Lists, quotes and blank lines

Bullets and quotes add a prefix to each non-empty selected line. Numbered lists count only non-empty lines. Blank rows remain blank, so they can separate list sections. Applying a line style to an already prefixed line adds another prefix rather than replacing the old one.

Compatibility across WhatsApp versions

WhatsApp interprets formatting after you paste or type the marked text. Available styles and their rendering can differ between Android, iPhone, desktop and web versions. Message context also matters: characters next to spaces or punctuation may not be recognized as expected. The read-only output shows the exact source marks, not a simulated WhatsApp preview.

Accessibility and readable emphasis

Formatting should support the words rather than carry the entire meaning. Screen readers, copied transcripts and notification previews may announce or expose marks differently. Keep instructions understandable without relying only on bold, italics or strikethrough.

Responsible use

Review recipients, links and sensitive details in WhatsApp before sending. This tool does not validate contact information, open WhatsApp or confirm delivery. Formatting cannot make unsafe content trustworthy and should not be used to imitate system notices or conceal a link destination.

Privacy and limits

Your message stays in this browser and is not sent to WhatsApp by this tool. It is not uploaded or saved. Input is limited to 250,000 characters, and the downloaded file contains plain UTF-8 text with the formatting marks visible.

Common questions

Does this send the message?

No. It only prepares the text. You decide where to paste it and when to send it.

Why can I still see the formatting marks here?

WhatsApp reads those marks after you paste the message. This tool keeps them visible so you can copy the exact source text.

Why was the whole line formatted?

Bullets, numbered lists and quotes work on complete lines. Text styles such as Bold and Italic use the exact character selection.

Can Remove marks change ordinary punctuation?

Yes. Supported marks can be indistinguishable from literal punctuation, so review the result and use Undo last change immediately if needed.

Why does the pasted message look different?

The destination app controls rendering. Update WhatsApp if appropriate, verify the marks and keep an unformatted version when compatibility matters.
